Private Tutor
I tutor a grade 2 student that attends a full French school. Particularly, I help him with Math and French. His grasp of French is good for his age, but he is more conversational than fluent. Using manipulatives, I have been successful in helping him increase his understanding of Math. We speak in French while we go over his math work, and it has improved his proficiency in oral French quite a bit over a relatively short period. We both enjoy our French conversations because neither of us get the opportunity to have many casual conversations in French outside of a school setting. Over the course of the time I have tutored him, his grades in Math and French have increased. With his grades, his motivation and willingness to learn has increased tremendously as well. This experience as a tutor has helped improve my one-on-one communication skills, as well as reinforced my ability to ensure that my student is maintaining concentration and staying on task.

Math PALS - Tutors in the Classroom
Working for the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board as a Math Tutor has been a great experience not only as a teacher but as a student as well. Math PALS is an after school math program implemented by the Catholic Board to help students improve their math skills. In helping facilitate this program at St. Peter Catholic Elementary School in Tecumseh, I have been able to support students to develop and meet academic goals and evaluate students to measure their skill progression and determine improvement areas. This experience has helped prepare me for entering a career in teaching because many of my responsibilities included, encouraging students to experiment with various methods and strategies to find what best works for them, upholding a good classroom climate and ensuring that all students felt important and valued throughout their experience with Math PALS regardless of their mathematical skills.
